The Modern Jewish Experience and the Entangled Web of Orientalism

Derde lezing in de serie Gevangen in de Botsing der Beschavingen: Joodse Cultuur tussen Oost en West door:

Steven Aschheim (Professor of Cultural and Intellectual History at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem):

"The Modern Jewish Experience and the Entangled Web of Orientalism"

Professor Aschheim (Hebrew University Jerusalem) has been named ‘one of the leading intellectual historians writing today’. He wrote numerous - often classic - books in the field of modern German and German-Jewish history, among which Brothers and Strangers: The East European Jew in German and German-Jewish Consciousness; The Nietzsche Legacy in Germany, 1890-1990; Scholem, Arendt, Klemperer: Intimate Chronicles in Turbulent Times and  Beyond the Border: The German-Jewish Legacy Abroad.

As a cultural and intellectual historian schooled by George Mosse, much of his research is aimed at stereotypes and the perception and representation of historical reality. It is this approach which will be central to this lecture as well. Aschheim will discuss how perceptions of "East" and "West" have been crucial forces in much of the shaping of the modern Jewish experience and the multiple ways in which "Occidentalism" and "Orientalism" have been used both against and by Jews. Pursuing this theme as it weaves its way through modern European and Jewish history and concluding with  Zionism and  the Middle East conflict (and with references to Edward Said and "the clash of civilizations"), Aschheim demonstrates the diverse and ironic ways in which these poles continue to inform crucial existential issues to this day.
