The many Guises of Jud Süss

Thursday evening 10th of May and Friday 11th of May 2012

The image of ‘The Jew’: Joseph Süss Oppenheimer via Feuchtwanger to Goebbels and beyond

How come the historical figure of Joseph Süss Oppenheimer (1698-1738), banker and court Jew of Duke Karl Alexander of Württemberg, has been portrayed in both a philo-Semitic and anti-Semitic way? How does this illustrate the stratification of negative and positive Jewish stereotypes? This will be the main question addressed during the Symposium The image of ‘The Jew’: Joseph Süss Oppenheimer via Feuchtwanger to Goebbels and beyond in which a number of movies on Jud Süss will be shown, and commented through lectures by international experts.
