S.L. Gilman, Aesthetic Surgery, The Jews, and the Invention of Beauty

(in English)

Sander L. Gilman is distinguished professor of the Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of Psychiatry at Emory University. He has written more than eighty book (among which a classical study of Jewish self-hatred) and is a renowned researcher of the cultural meaning of the body. In this lecture, he will search for the origins of aesthetic surgery in the 19th century Jewish History.

Joodse thema’s in een gay fantasia: discussieavond met scenes uit Angels in America

(in Dutch) 

Tony Kushner’s brilliant and Pulitzer Prize awarded play “Angels in America, A Gay Fantasia on National Themes” is more popular than ever, partly due to an HBO series. The play about split identities, conservative and progressive America, and the apocalyptic atmosphere related to the Aids epidemic, also contains highly Jewish themes. These themes will be discussed by a number of speakers, after the live staging of some scenes.

R. Jütte, The Naked Jewish Body – Historical Explorations From Antiquity to Modernity

Robert Jütte is Director of the Institute for the History of Medicine of the Robert Bosch Foundation, Adjunct Professor of History at the University of Stuttgart and advisor to the Hygiene Museum in Dresden. As a medical and social historian he has written more than thirty books, including a biography of the inventor of homeopathy, and a study of the history of the senses from antiquity till the cyberspace era.

MK. M. Michaeli about Gender in Israel

The feminist Member of Knesset Merav Michaeli (Labor Party) will discuss the influence of the army, the orthodoxy and Zionism on man-woman relationships in Israel. Michaeli is a politician and prominent opinion maker, who as a presenter, documentary maker and opinion writer of Haaretz, has frequently supported women rights. She is also the granddaughter of the venerated and maligned and finally murdered politician Rudolf Kastner.


All lectures will be in de Balie (Kleine Gartmanplantsoen 10) at 8:15 p.m.; four lectures (starting with the lecture by Sander Gilman on September 10) €30,-; separate tickets €10,-; students/friends €5,-
