This project concerns the digitzing of the Protocols (decisions and announcements) of the Parnassim (governors) of the Ashkenazi Jewish community in Amsterdam (1708-1808), by subject. The subjects are 1) announcements of the community; 2) decisions and disciplinary rules (punishments, fees, public penitence, excommunication; 3) relationships with the Amsterdam city government; 4) relationships between the Jewish community of Amsterdam and the Mediene and Jewish communities in Europe, Eretz Israel and Surinam.

Another aim of the project is making these subjects available to a larger public by summaries/translations of the Yiddish and Hebrew manuscripts into English. The project thus gives an insight into the beginning of the Ashkenazi administrative culture and daily life of eighteenth century Jewry in Amsterdam. The results of the project will be presented in a publication (both on a website (to be created especially for this aim) and in a book.

The project is carried out by dr. Tehilah van Luit.
