The Echoes of the Interwar Period
The interwar period continues to fascinate our imagination. The few years between the end of the First World War, and the beginning of the Second, marked by innovative culture, the rise of nationalism, anti-Semitism, economic crisis, decadence, political turmoil and the failure of democracy, ultimately leading to ultimate disaster, are often used as a warning for present times. This is done from widely different political perspectives, and whilst there is debate whether such a comparison can be made at all, the notion that this era in some way presents us with a mirror-image turns out to be difficult to resist. The speakers in this lecture series will shed their light both on the way this era has functioned as a mirror in the past, and on the way they think parallels should or should not be drawn between this period and now.
